Lakeland Update: Fall Play, Conferences, Community Sharing and More

The latest news from Lakeland High School.

Hello all! Scott Rolando here with this week's Update. Here we go!

Scam Alert: In the autumn, students (especially high school seniors) are looking for scholarships and preparing to apply for other types of financial aid. Please remind your students that the government WILL NOT CALL THEM to offer them grants.

We at the U.S. Department of Education occasionally hear from students who have been scammed by telemarketers who contact them, tell them they have won a government grant, and ask for their bank account information. Many students are savvy enough to realize the call must be a scam, but some are taken in.

Help your students avoid such scams by distributing "Don't Get Scammed on Your Way to College," available at www.studentaid.ed.gov/pubs.(direct link to our Consumer Protection publications section: http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/publications.jsp#04)

Community Sharing: Lakeland has received the following call for help from Community Sharing.  If you have anything to donate, please feel free to bring it to Lakekland (Attn: Lynne Burton) and she will make sure that it is dropped off.

Our Clothing department manager, Jane Ann McCarthy, has reported that we are in desperate need of the following items:

  • Hoodies - all sizes
  • Coats - all sizes
  • Anything in women's plus sizes 1x to 3x
  • Anything in girls' sizes 7 to 16
  • Winter scarves

If you can help with any of these things, we would be very grateful. Clothing can be dropped off at Community Sharing Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the second and fourth Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., and the second and fourth Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Lakeland High School Fall Play: The official 2011 Lakeland High School Fall Play is The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).  Performance dates are November 11, 12 @ 7:30pm and November 13 @ 2pm. All tickets are $10.00. Everyone is welcome!

Conferences: This is a reminder that conferences will take place on Thursday, October 20 from 3:30 - 7:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday, October 25 at the same time. In order to be environmentally friendly, we will not be printing out report cards for the card marking. Please print out a report card from Family Access before you come to the conferences. If you are unable to do so, come to our Student Services and a computer can be made available to you. If you do not know your Family Access account number please contact your students counselor and they can assist you.  We look forward to seeing you at conferences and remember that it is just as important to hear all the good comments about your student as the constructive ones so no matter what type of student your child is try and come out and meet your student's teachers.

Celebrate Good Times at LHS: Our building theme this year is Celebrate Good Times.  As a caring community, we want to acknowledge all the positive aspects of our building. Therefore, we have created a blog which will be written almost daily to point out the activities of our Lakeland community that we can celebrate. Please join in our daily celebrations by reading our blog at http://lhsadmincelebratesgoodtimes.blogspot.com and revel in our accomplishments. Feel free to make comments by setting up your own account or by joining as a guest when you want to comment on what we have written. Their will soon be a link on our web page right to the blog and we will send out a list serve when that happens.

Thanks for reading. Have a great week!
