Huron Valley outpaces the state

Every subject tested in every grade level reported a higher rate of proficiency than the Michigan state average, according to 2010 results provided by the Michigan Department of Education. Fourth-grade writing proficiency in the Huron Valley School District stood at 53.8 percent, while the statewide average was 47.2 percent, a difference of 6.6. The seventh-grade writing proficiency rate was 58.3 percent, which was 10.5 percent higher than the statewide average, at 47.8. Ninth-graders tested in social studies were 15.5 percentage points higher than the state average.

Elementary students tested slipped in reading, math improves

The percent of students in Huron Valley who met or exceeded state goals in grades 3-5 fell in reading, for all but grade 3, in the fall 2010 MEAP, compared to the 2009 results. Math proficiency in third grade was 96.7 percent in 2009 and rose slightly to 98 percent in 2010. Fourth-grade math and reading proficiency fell from 2009 marks of 97.2 percent and 91 percent, respectively, to 96.2 percent and 88 percent in 2010.

Middle school reading proficiency falls, while math improves

The number of students who met or exceeded state goals improved in grades 6-8, with a 5.2 percentage point increase in eighth-grade scores from 2009, from 85.1 percent to 90.3 percent. However, reading proficiency fell in sixth grade from 94.2 percent in 2009 to 91.2 percent in 2010, a decrease of 3 percentage points. Eighth-grade reading proficiency fell from 90 percent to 87.3 percent, a decrease of 2.7 percentage points.
