$21M Award in Death from Unnecessary Brain Surgery: 2015 in Review

DEARBORN, MI – In what was believed to be the largest jury award in Michigan’s history, a Dearborn hospital was ordered in May to pay a $21 million judgment to the family of a woman who mistakenly received brain surgery instead of a simple jaw alignment procedure.

Oakwood Healthcare admitted no wrongdoing. In a statement after the Wayne County Circuit Court jury’s record award, spokeswoman Paula Rivera-Kerr said hospital officials were “very concerned about how the details of this case have been portrayed.”
