4 Wyandotte Roosevelt Student-Athletes Suspended

Members of the varsity boys track team were suspended for violating both the district's Student Code of Conduct and the Athlete's Behavior Code of Conduct.

Four members of the varsity boys track team were suspended from school Tuesday for conduct they engaged in while out of town at a statewide tournament on Saturday.

School superintendent Carla Harting said she is legally forbidden from disclosing what the conduct was, but said once coaches found out about it, the team was pulled from the track meet and immediately brought home. She said she fully supports the coaches' decision.

"It was unfortunate that our team could not compete," Harting said. "When some team members could not compete, the coaches decided to withdraw our team from competition as it was a team event."

Harting said the student athletes violated both the district's Student Code of Conduct and the Athlete's Behavior Code of Conduct. Harting said she was unable to disclose whether the violations were criminal in nature or if police were involved.

When students returned to classes on Tuesday after the long Memorial Day weekend, high school administrators interviewed the four boys and then decided to suspend them for 10 days.

At least two of them are seniors, whose last day of class is June 7, meaning those students are now out for the rest of the year. Regardless of the suspension, Harting said, any senior who meets credit requirements is allowed to graduate.

The track team was in Jenison, near Grand Rapids, for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Team State Championship. This was the first time that Roosevelt was set to compete in the state meet.

Wyandotte Patch is not naming the students at this time.
