Police: Sleeping Driver Caps Wild Ride by Driving Into Creek

Before she allegedly crashed through a fence and into Monguagon Creek, elderly driver allegedly hit a traffic sign and drove away.

An elderly woman reportedly fell asleep and drove her van into Monguagon Creek near the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge late Wednesday afternoon.

The woman’s rescue by Wyandotte police officers, who jumped into the water and saved her before the creek swallowed the 2002 Dodge Caravan, capped a wild drive that allegedly included a minor mishap when she fell asleep and crashed into a traffic sign about 5:30 p.m.

The Southgate News-Herald reports the witness stopped and talked to the woman, who hasn’t been identified, and offered to call for help. But she reportedly drove away, Riverview Police Chief Clifford Rosebohm said, and the witness followed her and called police.

It’s a good thing he did.

Wyandotte officers Joe Carr, Jay Sharpes and Mike Sadowski were already in pursuit when the woman allegedly crashed through a fence and drove into Monguagon Creek.

The driver was taken to Oakwood Hospital - Southshore in Trenton for evaluation and was in stable condition in the intensive care unit Thursday. She may have suffered a medical emergency, police said.
