Soldier Fatally Shot in Attempt to Thwart Carjackers
The victim struggled and was fatally shot in the chest. His vehicle has been found, but police continue search for two suspects.
A soldier on leave from the U.S. Army National Guard soldier was shot and killed Monday night when he tried to stop carjackers from stealing his silver Pontiac Grand Am from a grocery store parking lot on Detroit’s west side.
The victim, 20, fought with the carjackers before he was fatally shot in the chest, WWJ-TV reports. The incident took place about 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Superland Market, located on Schoolcraft Road near Rutland Street, just east of the Southfield Freeway.
Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens said police are searching for two suspects – one an African-American male around age 17, and a second, whose description has not been released. A person of interest is being questioned.

The victim’s car has since been recovered. Police think the suspects may be driving a black Pontiac G6.
The Michigan Army National Guard has confirmed that the victim, whose name has not been released pending notification of his family, is a soldier.
