Victorian Tea Room to Close Next Week

The owners say a lack of business is to blame for the Wyandotte shop's shuttering.

The will close on March 26 after just three years in operation.

Owner Michael Kumiega of Westland said the move was prompted by a severe decline in business.

The small, spot has fallen on hard times due to the poor economy, he said.

“It’s not a necessity type of business,” Kumiega said of why patronage has dropped off.

Kumiega owns the Victorian Tea Room with his wife, Tina. He said they both dedicated a lot of time to the business, but decreased revenue made it difficult to pay the bills.

Upon opening the Victorian Tea Room, Kumiega said, business was good for the first two years. A primary reason for the success was that several private parties, such as baby and wedding showers, were booked there.

During the past year, however, only one such party has been booked, Kumiega said.

Despite having to close the business, Kumiega said, he's enjoyed the city and its people.

“Wyandotte is a unique, remarkable place,” he said. “People in Wyandotte are more friendly and personal than the rest of the state.”

The Victorian Tea Room is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

All cups, plates, pots, glassware, silverware and decor will be for sale once the business closes at the end of the month.
