Wyandotte Teacher Waiting to Hear if She's VFW's Teacher of the Year
Wilson Middle School's Kristen Zemnickas won the honor in the middle school category last month.

A Wyandotte teacher was named Teacher of the Year in the middle school category last month by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Kristen Zemnickas, who teaches at Wilson Middle School, now gets to compete for Teacher of the Year at the national level, according to a HometownLife report.
Known for incorporating the importance of U.S. military service in her lessons, Zemnickas was nominated for the award by her principal and needed to submit a résumé, show examples of how she’s taught patriotism and write her bio for Wyandotte’s VFW Post 1136, the report stated. After advancing past the regional district level, the middle school teacher found out Jan. 24 she won the state competition, the report added.

The national winner will be announced soon and will be invited to Washington, D.C., the report stated. If she wins, Zemnickas will receive $1,000 for professional development and $1,000 for her classroom, the report added.
