Here's The Number Of 'COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough' Cases In MN

A breakthrough case is when someone tests positive for the COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated.

ACROSS MINNESOTA — There have been 32,796 confirmed "COVID-19 vaccine breakthough" cases in Minnesota, according to numbers released by the state's Department of Health Monday.

A breakthrough case is when someone tests positive for the virus after being fully vaccinated. People who contracted COVID-19 before being vaccinated are not included in the number of breakthrough cases.

Total breakthrough cases

The number of total breakthrough cases is 32,796, or 1.032 percent of the 3,178,401 Minnesotans who are fully vaccinated, officials said. In other words, about 99 percent of fully vaccinated Minnesotans have not tested positive for COVID-19.

Hospitalization

A total of 1,690 fully vaccinated residents — or 0.053 percent of the fully vaccinated population — have been hospitalized with COVID.

Deaths

A total of 185 fully vaccinated residents — or 0.006 percent of the fully vaccinated population — have died of complications from the virus, according to state health officials.

"COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases are identified by actively matching Minnesota case records with Minnesota vaccination records," the state Department of Health said.

"All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Case and vaccine totals reflect only the results from laboratory testing and vaccinations that have been reported."

Since the pandemic began, 38,573 Minnesotans have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 8,243 residents have died from complications related to COVID-19.
