WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a decision that split mostly along party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to pass a resolution condemning President Donald Trump's tweets against Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and three other freshman congresswomen of color. According to reports, the resolution rebuked the president's statements made earlier this week via Twitter, calling them racist.

The resolution was the Democrats' response to several tweets directed at Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna S. Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. In the tweets, Trump stated the four Democratic congresswomen "originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe" and they should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

Omar responded to Trump on Twitter earlier this week, accusing him of "stoking white nationalism" because he is angry people like her are serving in Congress and "fighting against his hate-filled agenda."

The nonbinding resolution passed 240-187, the New York Times reported. Only four Republicans and the House’s lone independent, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, voted with all Democrats to condemn the president.

All three Republicans in Minnesota’s delegation — Tom Emmer, Pete Stauber and Jim Hagedorn — opposed the resolution, the Star Tribune reported. Minnesota Democrats in the U.S. House defended Omar and the others against the president’s attacks. All five voted in favor of the resolution.

Throughout the week, Trump continued to defend his statements, insisting they were not racist and calling the four congresswomen "wack jobs."

Earlier this week, the four congresswomen took turns rejecting Trump’s suggestion that they were un-American for disagreeing with his leadership and policies.
