MINNESOTA — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is hoping he can continue his party's streak of winning Minnesota, which dates back to 1972. In 2016, Donald Trump came within 45,000 votes — or less than two percentage points — of winning the state.

Hillary Clinton only won nine of Minnesota's 87 counties in 2016, but they were big enough to give her the state. However, by the time Minnesota was called for Clinton, most analysts had already projected a Trump victory.

Here are the Minnesota counties that went for Clinton in 2016:

  • Ramsey County (Clinton won with a 39.12 percent margin of victory)
  • Hennepin County (Clinton won by 34.93 percent)
  • Cook County (Clinton won by 22.27 percent)
  • St. Louis County (11.69 percent)
  • Dakota County (Clinton won by 4.71 percent)
  • Lake County (2.22 percent)
  • Washington County (Clinton won by 1.84 percent)
  • Olmsted County (Clinton won by .75 percent)

Trump won the vast majority of Minnesota counties by over 15 percent. His largest margin of victory was in Lake of the Woods County, which he won with a margin of victory but 44.02 percent.
