A Few Things Andover Neighbors Ask Before Starting a Backyard Deck

Now that the ground has thawed and yards are busy again, deck projects are one of the most common backyard topics around Andover this time of year. As a family-owned builder based in Anoka County since 2016, we field the same handful of neighbor questions every spring, and we thought it might help to share a few of them here.
The first is about timing. In our experience, the permit step and the footing inspection are the parts of an Andover deck project that benefit most from planning ahead, especially during the busy late-spring and summer stretch when local schedules fill up.
The second is about our soil. Much of Andover sits on the sandy Anoka soil plain, and our Minnesota freeze-and-thaw winters are tough on outdoor structures. That combination is why footing depth and proper foundations matter so much here, and why a deck built for our specific local conditions tends to hold up better over the years.
The third is about materials. A lot of neighbors ask whether to go with composite or PVC decking. Both have become popular in our area for their low upkeep across our seasons, but the right pick really depends on the yard, the look you want, and how you plan to use the space. There is no single right answer, just the one that fits your home.
We share this only as neighbors who happen to build decks for a living. Andover has been a great place to live and work, and we genuinely enjoy seeing backyards across the area get more use once the warm months arrive.
If you are an Andover resident thinking about an outdoor project this season, we hope a few of these notes help you feel more prepared before you begin.
