Apple Valley-Burnsville Couple Faked Chicago Robbery Report: Cops

The pair of Minnesota tourists wanted to have some fun so they lied about being robbed, police said.

A Dakota County couple is facing felonies after police said they fabricated a story about how they were robbed while visiting Chicago. Katie Mager, 27, of Apple Valley and Ryan Reiersgaard, 27, of Burnsville reported that three men approached them with a knife in downtown Chicago Dec. 7 and took an engagement ring, $5,000 cash, a Louis Vuitton suitcase, a Burberry purse, a MacBook Air laptop, and other items, according to police.

The couple said the robbery occurred after they got lost, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

Mager said one of the reported attackers “looked like a milk-dud or Fat Albert, reeked of marijuana and was short in height and heavy-set,” Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Carlson told the Chicago Tribune.

Reiersgaard told police it was Mager’s idea to fake a robbery report and that he participated because he wanted to have some fun on his birthday, according to Carlson. Reiersgaard turned 27 Dec. 11. He reportedly said their "shenanigans" can "get out of control.”

Mager told police she "made a mistake, had bad friends, and is sorry," and would tell police the truth if they promised to let her go, according to prosecutors.

Both Mager and Reiersgaard face a felony count of disorderly conduct. Reiersgaard has no criminal record in Minnesota while Mager was convicted of "unauthorized practice" as a peace officer in 2014 and of financial transaction fraud in 2013, City Pages reported.
