We Rescued Cats the First Time

An awakening about cats.

Being an animal rescue instead of a dog rescue means that you take other animals. So we decided we would help cats when we could as well. That later came to include an iguana and a potty bellied pig. But our first attempt at rescuing cats was to pick up two from a local pound and bring them home. We were informed both cats were approximately two years old. One was an orange short haired tabby and the other was a 20 pound long haired orange cat. The latter was not neutered yet. We brought both Leroy and Scar the giant cat home and they seemed fine, until nightfall. As soon as we laid down in bed we heard a blood curdling scream that came from the bigger cat, Scar. We bolted into the dining room to be met by the world's worst smell. Scar had marked my rubber tree plant and was letting us know in no uncertain terms that he was still all male. First thing the next morning we headed for the vet with both cats. The vet said she thought Leroy was barely a year old but that Scar was closer to 8 years old. At that point I did not care how old he was, I just wanted to know that he would never spray again. And he didn't. There were times when I think Scar might have wanted to but he never did. Leroy would wait for Scar to walk by and then jump on his back and ride Scar like a horse. If Leroy was above Scar at all he would take a paw and smack him. But Scar put up with all of Leroy's antics until the day he passed away. I really never thought cats had much personality until we rescued some. But they do and they have a lot of love to share.
