Apple Valley Police Chase Ends In Suicide: Cops

The man's mother told police her son was intoxicated and suicidal.

APPLE VALLEY, MN — Authorities say a 21-year-old man killed himself Tuesday after leading police on a chase through town. On April 24 officers from the Apple Valley Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Hunters Way regarding an "intoxicated" and "suicidal" 21-year-old man with a gun.

The man’s mother said he fired shots in the garage of the home. Before officers arrived the man left in a vehicle.

Police located the car and attempted to make a traffic stop. The man drove away and led officers on a pursuit out of Apple Valley and into a rural part of Scott County.

The man's vehicle eventually went off the road and the driver emerged with a handgun.

Officers used "verbal commands" and deployed less lethal force — including a bean bag round — in an attempt to gain compliance. The man then shot himself with the handgun, according to police.

Neither the man's mother nor the officers involved suffered injuries.

The incident is being investigated by the Apple Valley Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the man's identity.
