📰 News we're reading

• Burnsville police search for missing 53-year-old man with medical condition (fox9.com) — Burnsville police are urgently asking residents to help locate 53-year-old John Michael Kapaun, who left his home near the 2000 block of 121st Street Tuesday afternoon without a phone or vehicle. He often walks in Terrace Oaks West and Black Dog parks, and anyone who may have seen him is urged to call Detective Warnemunde at 952-641-1126 or 911 immediately.

• Retiring chief given city's highest honor (hometownsource.com) — Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz is retiring after receiving the city’s highest honor and guiding the department through COVID, the 2024 line-of-duty deaths, and major reforms. Her tenure leaves a strong focus on officer wellness, more women in leadership, and an upcoming police station expansion with dedicated wellness spaces that will open in 2027.

• Minnesota Appeals Court strikes down binary-trigger ban (kare11.com) — A Minnesota Court of Appeals ruling has struck down the state’s ban on binary triggers, a restriction lawmakers passed after a shooter using such a device killed three Burnsville first responders. Judges agreed the ban violated Minnesota’s single-subject rule because it was tucked inside a massive 1,100-page state government bill, leaving the specific restriction unenforceable while other parts of the law stand.
