Did Your Grandfather Kill the Streetcar?

The caretaker of the last trolley in Minneapolis said the reason they aren't around anymore is because of people moving to suburbs like Burnsville.

"People want to believe there's a villain. In reality, their grandfather who moved to Burnsville is the villain and there's no sexiness to that."

That’s how Aaron Isaacs explained the death of the streetcar to Fox 9 in a Tuesday story. With Minneapolis planning a new streetcar line, the TV station talked to Isaacs—co-author of Twin Cities by Trolley and caretaker of the last trolley in town—to find out why the previous network died off.

Isaacs brushed aside “conspiracy theories” that mob boss Kid Cann or a triumvirate of General Motors, Firestone and Standard Oil killed the streetcar. Instead, he blamed a newly enriched public who became enamored with automobiles and moved out to the suburbs. That, in turn, changed the makeup of the city.
