Online Public School Visits Soudan Underground Mine State Park

MTS Minnesota Connections Academy students and their families from around the state (including Burnsville) gathered for the field trip.

Earlier this month, K-12 students from the online public school MTS Minnesota Connections Academy, had an opportunity to visit Minnesota’s oldest iron ore mine during a field trip to Soudan Underground Mine State Park. Family members and Connections Academy faculty also attended. The group learned about how mining shaped the history and culture of the Iron Range as they explored the dry house, drill shop, crusher house and engine house, and traveled a half mile beneath the earth to the deepest area that was mined. Students came from various areas of the state, including the cities of Aitkin, Chisholm, Hibbing, Barnum, Grand Rapids, Hill City, Farmington, Burnsville, Hermantown, Foley, Monticello, Pequot Lakes, Hoyt Lakes, Minnetrista, Milaca, St. Paul, Keewatin, Cloquet and Ely. Throughout each month, students have the opportunity to attend field trips and community activities which provide students with the opportunity to support their daily courses and socialize with faculty, other students and their families.
