State Bans Dermatologist with Burnsville Clinic from Doing Cosmetic Surgery

The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice has ordered Dr. Patrick Carney— dermatologist at Skin Speaks Advancements in Dermatology clinics in Edina, Burnsville, Woodbury, Blaine and Crystal (near Golden Valley)—not to practice cosmetic surgery.

The board sanctioned Carney based on three complaints, the Star Tribune reported: a 2007 chemical peel, a 2009 breast augmentation and a 2008 tummy tuck.

“This has been a long and difficult ordeal,” Carney told the newspaper. “While I have had disagreements with the board throughout this process, I recognized that it was time for everyone to move on. This stipulation allows that to happen.”

Allegations of medical misconduct by Carney was part of a series of investigative articles in the Star Tribune in February 2012 titled "Discipline deferred—how Minnesota avoids punishing problem doctors."

Nature of Misconduct: Violating a state or federal law relating to the practice of medicine; unethical and unprofessional conduct; improper management of medical records; improper prescribing practices.

Action Taken: Dr. Carney’s license is conditioned and restricted as follows:
1. He is reprimanded.
2. He is prohibited from performing cosmetic surgery. The prohibited cosmetic surgery procedures shall include, but are not limited to: mammoplasty, abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, otoplasty, rhytidectomy, and liposuction.
