Be a part of 2018!
An estimated 40% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, most involving losing weight, eating healthy, and making the most of moments with family and friends, among many others. However, historical studies show that the majority of people fall short of these goals within weeks of the New Year and go back to their prior routine. In fact, a few studies show that you have to do something for 14-21 days to make it a new habit. Most Americans tend to give up a little at a time during this and eventually end up resorting back to their old ways.
In Eagan, as Americans, we are no exception to the above historical data. However, there is hope! There have been studies done that show that being part of a group, having a sense of community or being close to your friends and family can assist in achieving your goals and increasing your lifespan, no matter how big or small. Being a part of something has many positives, one of the major ones is accountability. Being a part of a group makes you hold yourself more accountable as it provides you with a sense of being a part of something bigger than you. Part of that feeling also challenges you to push harder as you work for your goal. Accountability (in the weight loss realm) can be as simple as asking a spouse or loved one to help motivate you or as complex as joining a group class gym, a DIY gym or studio or hiring a personal trainer.

Getting fit doesn’t have to be expensive as there are also many online communities, like Instagram, Facebook, etc. that afford a community platform. In fact, one study showed that 85% of those who tried to lose weight while posting updates on Facebook actually achieved their goal since they felt more accountable and had such positive feedback and support from their friends and family. Another major benefit is reassurance. When you are feeling weak and ready to stumble a lending ear can be all you need to remain strong.
One of my favorite quotes is, “Be happy for this moment, for this moment is your life.” When you are feeling weak, think about this moment as just a drop in a bucket, take a deep breath and know that the weakness can and will pass. You are stronger than you think! Be a part of that moment and focus on being the best version of you that you can be. If you do stumble (which we all do), forgive yourself and get back up and BE A PART OF 2018! You can do it! I believe in you! Remain strong and plug along!
