Meet the One-Act Play Director: Deborah Karulf

In honor of the Eden Prairie Players' ongoing production of A Collection of One Acts, Patch will profile a different director every day for the next week.

Editor's Note: The Eden Prairie Players are in the midst of mounting their eighth production of A Collection of One Acts. Patch will publish a profile on one of the six participating directors every day this week. Today's featured one-act director is Deborah Karulf, who responded to our questions via email. She is directing the play "The Sweet Spot" by Richard Karulf, M.D.

Eden Prairie Patch: Why did you choose this play?

Karulf: This play was written in honor, and in memory, of our many family and friends who have courageously battled breast cancer. This play has poignancy, humor, and relevance. It’s a warmhearted look at the relationship that develops between two very different women, in the most unlikely of situations—the chemo cancer center. We call it a dram-edy, as it’s a drama with comedic elements woven within the fabric of the play. Naturally, I think it’s well written, with my husband, Rick, being the playwright!

Eden Prairie Patch: What was your greatest challenge as a one-act director?

Karulf: There were many terrific opportunities with EP Players One Act, but if I had to choose one challenge, I’d say the simple issue of “logistical machinations” was the greatest challenge. Due to rental constraints, we don’t have the stage until four days before opening night performance, so that always keeps the actors and the directors hopping!

Eden Prairie Patch: What was the most rewarding aspect of directing this show?

Karulf: The most rewarding aspect of the show is always the privilege of working with the terrific people involved in the show. It’s always a joy to see the characters come to life from a page. It’s tickled me to have some of my EPHS techies, who assisted in the high school production of this show last winter, help with the EP Players production of Sweet Spot.  Last, but not least, it’s been immensely gratifying to direct a play written by my husband. It’s not often one gets that honor. The fact that Rick is pleased with this production makes me very happy!

Eden Prairie Patch: What should audiences expect from your production?

Karulf: Audiences can expect to enjoy the show—to laugh, yet be touched by the poignancy of the relationships in the play. It is heartfelt, genuine and life affirming. We’ve received very positive feedback from audiences about the performance, and that delights us. The goal is to present an authentic slice of life, with humor and heart; I think we’ve done that. Having a responsive and engaged audience makes the performance all the more meaningful, so thanks to the audiences for supporting our shows!
