E.D.I.N.A Soon after I moved to Edina 22 years ago, I learned that our city name was an acronym for many of our neighbors. “Every Day I Need Attention.” Our residents, school children and teams were referred to as “Cake Eaters.” These negative remarks implied that Edina’s relative affluence made its residents insular and arrogant. Edinans were, and are, so much more than that cliché.
If you have not listened to Linda Masica’s debate performance at City Hall on October 11, please do so before you vote on November 6. Find it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkjj0Nn1K8w&feature=relmfu Although Ms. Masica has been an involved public servant in Edina her ideas for our community are passive and myopic. Ms. Masica’s desire to return to a legendary insulated Edina are not what Edina needs in the 21st century.
Our community will not be well-served by public officials whose attitudes hark back to the “Cake Eater” cliché which Edina never deserved and which does not represent our residents. We need a mayor who can address Edina’s role in our state and region to keep our city vibrant. We need a mayor who encourages citizen engagement through commissions and work plans. We need a mayor with a long-term vision for commerce, neighborhoods and transportation that will continue to entice businesses and energetic people to our community.
