Dixie the Darling Dog

This Chihuahua/Papillon mix is available for adoption through Secondhand Hounds.

Adorable but anxious, little Dixie has gotten more comfortable over the months she’s been in the care of Edina rescue group Secondhand Hounds, but certain things still make her nervous.

Juelle Welliver, who has been taking care of Dixie since early this summer, knows little of Dixie’s early life but suspects that it was traumatic, as the year-old Chihuahua/Papillon mix is scared of sticks and brooms and will nip at strangers who approach her too quickly.

Welliver said it took about two months for Dixie to be completely comfortable with her, but today she is at ease in her temporary home.

“She needs a special person that will work with her and love her to pieces,” Welliver said. “Every day I see her getting more social and doing things that she wouldn't have thought of doing when she first came.”

Dixie’s come a long way over the last few months, and Welliver believes the positive changes will continue with the right person.

“She's made such wonderful progress, I want to see her go to someone that will help her reach her full potential,” Welliver said.

Since it was founded in August of 2009, Secondhand Hounds has placed more than 1,400 pets in loving homes. If you are interested in adopting Dixie, fill out an adoption application on the Secondhand Hounds website. The organization is also always looking for volunteers
