Baker's Late Goal Helps Lacrosse Team Make State

The Hornets scored the winning goal with only two seconds left on the clock.

On Thursday, May 31, the boys lacrosse team made it to state for the first time in the history of the program thanks to the late-game heroics of Senior Brian Baker.

With only two seconds left on the clock, Baker snuck a goal past the Blake goalie to secure the lacrosse team's first sectional title win.

The win over Blake was the latest in Edina’s postseason campaign, and in an ironic twist, the Hornets have won more games in the postseason then they did during regular season play.

"We talked all year that we had a shot," said Head Coach Travis Wells. "We were a good team. We felt that practice was going the right way."

He attributed part of the team’s success to the tenacity of the players on the roster.

"The seniors could have quit on us, the team could have quit on us," he said. "But no one quit.”

With a final score of 5-4, the game was fairly low scoring, largely due to tight defence and quick goaltending on both sides. Blake only allowed in 5 of 37 shots by Edina, while Edina’s defense only allowed the Bears to take 12 shots during the game.

In spite of the fierce Blake defense, Edina’s attack was able to close into the goal and score multiple times. Junior Derek Todd’s two goals boosted him to second top-scorer in the state with 47 goals this season, behind Lakeville North’s Charlie Hayes.

The other Edina goals came from senior Danny Regan, sophomore Ted Goltzman and the winning goal from Baker.
