The fall session of the Edina Police Department's "Citizens' Academy" starts on Sept. 12. The 11-week interactive course uses presentations, demonstrations and hands-on learning to give Edina residents and community members an intimate knowledge of the workings and challenges of the police department."It was an awesome experience,"  Lori Lohmann, a previous participant of the academy, said in a statement. "It gave a clearer picture of what our police do to ensure our community is safe."Participants take part in mock traffic stops and "shoot/don't shoot" video scenarios, tour the Hennepin County Jail, meet a police dog and schedule a ride-along with an officer.The last day to register for the academy is Sept. 9. Here's more information from the department: Classes are held Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. until Dec. 5 at either the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., or the South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, 7525 Braemar Blvd. There will be no class on Oct. 31 or Nov. 28. Participants must be at least 21 years old and must pass a criminal background check. The class fee is $25.
