Edina's Ward Takes Second at State Tennis

Hornets teammates Boyer and Marinovich take third in doubles state meet.

The girls tennis team finished up the Fall 2011 season with a singles second place finish and a doubles third place finish to complement its .

Senior Caroline Ward took second place in the Class AA singles tournament on Friday, while Morgan Marinovich and Maddie Boyer took third in the doubles tournament at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

Ward lost the championship to Rochester Century eighth-grader Jessica Aney. Aney, who took state runner-up a year ago as a seventh-grader, won the championship match 6-2, 6-2.

Ward reached the title match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Willmar’s Xiaodan Yu, a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Minnetonka’s Jessica Richards and a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Century’s Kelsey Frechette—who won the Class AA title a year ago.

Marinovich and Boyer took third by beating Visitation’s Meredith Lawrence and Morgan Morrison in the third place match by a 7-5, 7-5 margin.

The Hornets’ duo opened up the tournament by beating Coon Rapids’ Brianna Havelka and Elizabeth Storrick 6-1, 6-1, then beat St. Cloud Tech’s Jill Kedrowski and Alexie Portz 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. However, Marinovich and Boyer lost 6-4, 6-2 to Rochester Mayo’s Kylie Boyer and Kate Rosenow in the championship semifinals, sending them to the third place match.

The second and third place finishes come two days after Edina won its 15th straight team championship.
