Edina Swimmers Take 2nd at True Team State
The Hornets bypassed Wayzata for second, trailed only Stillwater in the final standings.
The Edina girls swimming and diving team used a slow and steady approach at the Class AA True Team state meet on Wednesday, and it nearly won them a championship.
The Hornets remained in third place for much of the night, but thanks to a strong showing in the 500 freestyle and beyond Edina leap-frogged Wayzata and took second place at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Edina finished with 2,167 points, trailing only Stillwater with 2,254.
“The important thing was all the girls on the team contributed,” coach Jeff Mace said. “We had young kids on the team that were in a big meet for the first time, and they really contributed to the team total. It was fun to watch them gather that second half and get a little determined.”

Edina was in third place from the first event through the seventh, but in the 500 freestyle the Hornets made their move. Junior Madeleine Eden won the event with a 5:00.24 performance, and teammate Amelia Anderson finished fifth at 5:20.06 to garner additional points.
In the 100 backstroke, a sixth-place finish by Kate Moreton along with strong swims by eighth-graders Adair Fogelberg and Erica Evans helped pad their lead over Wayzata.

“I’d have to say the eighth-grade backstrokers came through today,” Mace said. “They really did come through today.”
In the breaststroke, Edina picked up three top-10 finishes. Olivia Anderson won with a 1:05.09 time, Heather Laedke took third at 1:06.77 and Maryellen Campbell took eighth at 1:08.90.
Mace said seeing this top competition will only help the Hornets continue to prepare for the Minnesota State High School League state tournament in November.
“It’s a good gauge to see where we’re at against the competition,” he said. “Right now Stillwater looks very, very good. I guess we’ll have to get back to training.”
