If your cat is sick, you have probably felt bad that he/she won’t eat. Depending upon the cause of the illness, there may be specific treatment that will help such as IV fluids for kidney failure or pancreatitis. More general options are: 1) Opening a new can of food and offering a teaspoon on a flat plate so as not to have any interference with whiskers on the edge of a bowl. A small amount of food seems to be more appealing to a cat than a whole can of food. 2) Try chicken or turkey baby food 3) Try a/d or i/d prescription foods 4) fresh cooked chicken or turkey cut up into small pieces - again, small amounts are better than large amounts 5) If your cat likes dry food, offer ⅛ cup fresh from the bag 4 X daily - throw away the food that has been out a couple hours as it loses its smell and is less appealing. 6) Top dress the food with some tuna juice or chicken broth. 7) Add sprinkles of FortiFlora probiotic to the food 8) Talk to your vet about medications such as Mirtazapine which is an appetite stimulant and anti-nausea medication given every other day and Cerenia which is an anti-nausea medication and abdominal pain reliever.
