Hornets Ease into Post-Labor Day Schedule
A light slate for Edina athletic squads on the first day of school.

Edina athletic teams eased into their post-Labor Day schedules on Tuesday as only a small sampling of Hornets squads returned to competition on the first day of school.
Boys Soccer
The Edina boys soccer team remained undefeated on the year by winning its Lake Conference opener in shutout form, 4-0, against visiting Hopkins on Tuesday night.

With the victory, the Hornets improved to 5-0-1 on the season following a 3-1 win over St. Paul Academy—ranked sixth in Class A—last Saturday.
Individual statistics were not made available. Edina, currently ranked second in Class AA, hosts Breck on Saturday in its lone remaining game of the week.

Girls Soccer
The Edina girls soccer team opened its Lake Conference slate with a 0-0 tie against visiting Hopkins on Tuesday.
It was the first non-win of the season for the third-ranked Hornets, who currently hold a 4-0-1 record.
Through five games, Brittany Bingham leads Edina with five goals and an equal number of assists; Hailey Merrill has four goals to her name thus far in 2011. Goalkeeper Allie Davis has made 10 saves on 14 shots faced this autumn.
The Hornets play at non-conference opponent Anoka at 7 p.m. Thursday, then host sixth-ranked Woodbury at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Volleyball
A four-game loss (19-25, 25-27, 17-25, 15-25) at Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday dropped the Edina volleyball team to 1-1 on the season.
Individual statistics for the match were not yet available. The Hornets play at Prior Lake at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in their final match of the week.
Girls Tennis
The Edina girls tennis team hosts Blake at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Community Center.
Swimming and Diving
The Edina girls swimming and diving team hosts Minnetonka at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Art Downey Aquatic Center.
Cross-Country
Edina's girls and boys cross-country running teams will both compete in an invitational meet at 3 p.m. Thursday at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista.
