Joe Amato will discuss his latest book, Surfaces:
Historical Reflections ( University of California Press, 2012). This
book continues his examination of some of the seemingly trivial things
which we take for granted, but which, upon closer examination, can be
highly interesting and illuminating, such as dust and walking. And
surfaces, after all, form the world we experience, think, and express.



Joseph A. Amato received his B.A. in history from the University of
Michigan in 1960; his M.A. from the Université de Laval, Québec, in
1963; his PhD from the University of Rochester in 1970. He did
post-doctoral study in the history of European cultures at UCLA in
1975-76. In 1969 Amato began teaching at Southwest Minnesota State
University in Marshall, Minnesota, where he was a founder and chair of
the History Department. Amato has written over twenty books as well as
numerous reviews, essays, and a long poem. He won the Minnesota
Humanities Prize for Lit erature in 2005.
 

This lecture will be presented in memory of one our founding members,  Rhoda Lewin, who died earlier this year. A brief MISF annual meeting will
take place before the presentation begins.
