Minneapolis Senior Photographer {How to Prepare for Your Senior Session}

It's that time of year Seniors of 2014! It is time for some amazing senior photos, and we want to share with you some tips on how to get the most out of your senior portrait session. Schedule your session by October 31st and we will upload your yearbook photo for free with paid purchase!

Your senior photos are all about showing off your true personality. Make sure your clothing and accessory choices reflect who you are in your life right now. Many graduates wonder what they should wear for their photos. The questions are endless: how many outfits, sports gear, instruments, artwork, etc. Is it enough or is it too much? Here are our suggestions for what we have found works for both girls and guys.

Many girls can't wait for their senior photos and they just want to bring their entire closet!  We suggest narrowing down to 2 or 3 of your favorite outfits. Here are some things to consider:

1. Flattering fits. Try on your favorite outfits with a friend, and have them tell you what fits best! Keep in mind that bunchy tops or layered dresses sometimes make you look bigger than you are, whereas flowy material such as chiffon or cotton are more flattering.

2. No writing or logos! In a few years you may regret wearing a large logo in your photos. Timeless is better, less is more when choosing outfits for your senior photos.  Don't wear anything that you might get sick of or grow out of a few years later.

3. Stay away from fads and trends. This is most important for your Yearbook photo. For your personal photos that you will share with friends and family the most important thing to remember is to be yourself how you are right now.

4. Color vs. Prints. The right colors can compliment your skin tone, eye color, and hair color. If you're unsure what colors you look best in then get some opinions from your friends or family. You can also bring some clothing options along with you to your photo shoot, and we will help you choose what will photograph best! Prints can be great as well, they can add some personality and dimension to a photo! Mix prints and solids to add dimension to your senior photographs

*Accessories rule: If you are someone who loves accessories such as scarfs, jewelry, hair accessories, watches, etc. then stick to this rule for your photos: No more than 2 to 3 accessories in a shot at one time. This way the focus stays on you! We recommend Forever 21's jewelry store Love 21 in the Mall of America.

For the Guys:

Guys tend to not care as much about their clothing or even their senior photos in general. Here at Tiny Acorn, we want to let you know that we are going to have an awesome time at your shoot, and you will be surprised by how much fun you will have! It is worth it to spend a little time thinking about what you will wear in these photos.

1. No writing or logos! It is crucial that guys stick to this rule. Plain tees and dress shirts are best. If you must wear a logo, stick to small images such as Polo Ralph Lauren or Lacoste.  They are both great examples of logos that have remained timeless for years.

2. Bring a few of everything. If you are looking for a few different types of looks, bring more than one colored polo, a few different dress shirts, different colored shorts and pants. We can help you mix and match to achieve the best look.

3. If you like prints, stick to the basics. Timeless prints such as plaid, small stripes, argyle, and even Burberry look great in photos.

4. Layers. This is a great way to finish off your outfit. A plaid dress shirt with an argyle sweater layered on top gives a casual professional presence.

5. Keep your hair looking natural. Guys, this isn't the day to try a new hairstyle. Instead, keep your hair natural and clean. Stay away from gels and hairsprays, which could possibly show up in your photos and make your hair look wet or dirty. If you need product, use a pomade that wont make your hair look greasy. Clean and combed hair looks great, long or short!

Other details to consider:

Sports

Think outside of the box. For example, if you are a football player, don't just bring a football but also a helmet, cleats or your letter jacket. Uniforms always look better in the studio or actually on the field, rink or court. Just let us know ahead of time and we can plan for the perfect location.

Instruments

We love photographing artistic seniors with their instruments. We can photograph these in the studio or outside on location.

Wondering if you should do studio shots or on location for your senior portraits?

It's important to have your personality shine in your senior pictures. Most graduating seniors tend to prefer outdoor locations. If you can't decide between the two, then give us a call or head to our website at www.tinyacornphoto.com and see which senior photographs you prefer.
