Over-the-Knee Boots Add Fashion, Function

Tall boots got a little taller in 2010 and the extra few inches add miles of style, as over-the-knee boots are both fashionable and functional.

"The over-the-knee boot is the quickest way to update all your fave, fall staples," explained Amanda Rose, owner of at 50th & France. 

Fashion forward females can choose looks that include buckles, zippers, snaps, ties, heel height, color, texture and more. The options are endless.

Jinny Krogman, buyer/sales manager for at Galleria, reveals an option that leads to even more looks.

"The fold-over over-the-knee boot gives the customer more options," Krogman said. "It allows you to create that chic day look or a more polished glam look."  

While leggings and skinny jeans are standard pairings, shorter skirts also work well with the boot. In fact, this boot's liberal leg coverage and ultra low heel creates a conservative semblance for a higher hemline. A basic button-down dress can be put together perfectly with the tall black boot on bottom and colorful accent on top. 

On a recent trip to New York, I noticed that the flat over-the-knee boot was a staple among mothers in Manhattan. The trend is now underway in Minneapolis. 

"We started to carry the look last year, however, this is the year we are seeing it really hit mainstream," Krogman said.

Buying both flat styles and heeled styles, Krogman said "Edina women certainly mix it up in variation." 

Liz Heinecke, writer of Edina-based blog Kitchen Pantry Scientist, quipped about wearing her flat over-the-knee boots with a sprained ankle and still looking dressed up. She's pleased with her purchase.

"I love that they sort of dress things down or up depending on what I'm wearing," Heinecke said. "I can wear them almost anywhere."

Ladyslipper Boutique owner Rose also appreciates the put together look the boots offer.

"I love them with denim leggings and a cozy sweater," Rose said. "Also, skinny denim, a slouchy tee and a form fitting blazer...so Rachel Zoe!" 

While fashion and function don't always go hand-in-hand, over-the-knee boots are the exception. When worn with thin cotton leggings, the boot will actually camouflage not-so-perfect knees that leggings tend to hug and highlight. The boots effectively promote a long, lean leg. This nice clean line is perhaps more appreciated with a straight leg pant, which so easily bunches at the top when tucked into a traditional knee high boot.   

Finally, this fashionable/functional boot adds warmth, cuts the wind and keeps your pants dry in slushy snow. So if you're still trying to justify this fashion forward frill, here lies your practical pretext: We live in Minnesota.
