Burnsville (Minn.) – From tour T-shirts to key chains, glow sticks, mugs and posters, any one who’s ever attended a Rock concert or festival knows about all the opportunities to buy mementoes of their favorite bands. But how do the bands decide what merchandise their fans will buy?
On Monday, July 1 musician, author and nationally acclaimed band merch expert, Scotty Roller leads a workshop that provides keen insight and useful information for bands on how to select the merch that will sell and how to market it from the stage and on the web. Roller will discuss many of the merch ideas and strategies he writes about in his book, Your Band Name Here: A Musicians Guide to Merch.
“The great thing about Scotty’s book, and his workshop presentation, is that he isn’t espousing theory. He’s sharing the tips and techniques that have garnered him financial success in selling merch for his bands,”said Stacey Marmolejo owner of School of Rock and host of the workshop. “I met Scotty at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants conference) this year and when he said he was passing through Minnesota this summer I begged him to stop and offer his workshop here.”
“Minneapolis is such a rich and vibrant music scene but we rarely have access to the music BUSINESS workshops. At best, we have to travel to Chicago and more often than not, to L.A., Nashville or NY,” continued Marmolejo. “Every band who has ever struggled to sell their merch should attend this workshop. Just because it’s held at the School of Rock doesn’t mean the message is targeted at kids’ bands.”
In addition to its regular schedule of lessons, camps and performance programs for young musicians, the School of Rock regularly brings in musicians and other industry professionals to provide insight into the music industry for adults and other members of the music community at large.
