Sports Roundup: Boys Soccer Loses Out on Conference Title

Hornets fall at Minnetonka as Wayzata surges to Lake championship on final day of regular season.

However, after back-to-back 2-1 losses—to Wayzata on Tuesday and lastly, at Minnetonka on Thursday—Edina had the conference championship wrested away by the resurgent Trojans, who blasted Hopkins 5-0 at home two hours after the Hornets' loss.

Statistics from Thursday's loss were not available. The fourth-ranked Hornets fell to 5-3 in Lake play to the Trojans' 6-2 conference mark with the regular-season concluding setback.

Edina, heading into the playoffs with a 12-3-1 record, now looks to regroup as it prepares for the Section 2AA Tournament that begins on Oct. 10.

The consecutive defeats may have cost the Hornets a No. 1 sectional seed and home field advantage throughout as No. 5-ranked 2AA rival Bloomington Jefferson wrapped the regular season with a six-game winning streak. However, the Jaguars finished with a 10-2-4 record and also finished second in its South Suburban Conference race.

Edina and Jefferson tied 0-0 in this season's mid-campaign matchup on Sept. 1. Both teams also lost 2-1 to South Suburban champion Eastview.

Girls Soccer

A 1-0 win at Minnetonka on Thursday clinched a third-place finish in the Lake for the Edina girls soccer team.

Statistics for the game were not available. The Hornets finished conference play with a 2-2-4 record and carry a 7-3-5 overall mark into its regular-season finale at Duluth East at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Seedings and pairings for the Section 2AA Tournament have not yet been announced, with competition to begin Oct. 13.

Football

A 28-6 home loss to Lake rival and No. 2-ranked Wayzata dropped the Edina football team to 3-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

The Hornets' lone points came on a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Mark Handberg to wide receiver Marley Allison.

Edina hosts No. 1 Eden Prairie next Friday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The Edina volleyball team lost in four games (25-15, 19-25, 18-25, 21-25) at Minnetonka on Thursday to drop to 16-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the Lake. Statistics from the match were not available.
