Sports Roundup: Fall Season Begins For Hornets
Several Edina teams begin 2011 campaigns last week, with more to follow in the coming days.

The fall sports season began last week for a number of Edina High School squads, with the rest set to commence their 2011 campaigns within the next several days.
Girls Soccer Starts 2-0
The Edina girls soccer team started its season off right by means of a 5-0 win over visiting Elk River on Thursday.

Brittany Bingham led the Hornets to victory by pacing the squad with two goals and two assists in the win. Vivian Engen, Hailey Merrill and Lara Boman each scored once against the Elks, with goalkeepers Gina Diaz and Allie Davis splitting the shutout win with two saves apiece.
Edina also topped Robbinsdale Armstrong, 2-1, on Saturday to improve to 2-0 on the year. Statistics from that game were not available.

The Hornets travel to Stillwater for a Tuesday night game, before returning home to face Bloomington Jefferson at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Boys Soccer Also 2-0
The Edina boys soccer team claimed two wins over visiting teams to start its season last week as the Hornets bested Cretin-Derham Hall (3-1) on Thursday and Holy Family Catholic (4-0) on Saturday.
Individual statistics were not available. Edina hosts Prior Lake on Tuesday, Bloomington Jefferson on Thursday and St. Paul Academy on Saturday. Game time for all three matches is 7 p.m.
Girls Tennis Begins Thumps Mayo
The Edina girls tennis team began its quest for a 14th-consecutive state title with a 6-1 defeat of Rochester Mayo in its first official Minnesota match of the season on Thursday.
Individual results were not available. The Hornets also made their regular appearance in the Dominican Cup in Madison, Wis. on Aug. 19-20, finishing in first place in the tournament.
Volleyball, Football, Corss-Country Start This Week
The Edina girls volleyball team begins its season on Tuesday at Bloomington Kennedy with a match scheduled for 7 p.m., while the Hornets football team opens its campaign at Andover at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Edina's cross-country squads start up their season at Crow Creek Park in Betterndorf, Iowa on Saturday morning.
Results were not available for Edina's girls swimming and diving meet against Minneapolis Southwest last Thursday.
