Sports Roundup: Girls Soccer Ties Wayzata, Cross Country Teams Take Fifth

Hornets runners compete in Victoria Lions Invitational while girls soccer ties, volleyball loses to Wayzata at home.

While the Edina cross-country teams were both finishing fifth in a nearby inviational, the Hornets girls soccer and volleyball teams battled Lake Conference rival Wayzata at home on Tuesday night. The three programs met with a trio of different results.

Cross-Country

Both the Edina boys and girls cross-country teams claimed fifth-place finishes at the 24-team Victoria Lions Invitational in Chaska on Tuesday, with the boys losing a tiebreaker with rival Eden Prairie.

Will Burke finished sixth in a time of 15 minutes 50.5 seconds, while Matt Lumbar took 11th in 16:12.9 to pace the boys; Piper Bain's ninth-place run of 15:11.4 led the girls.

Girls Soccer

The Edina girls soccer team tied visiting Wayzata, ranked sixth in Class AA, by a 1-1 score in the second-to-last Lake game of the season.

Assisted by Vivian Engen, Mary Stafford scored for the Hornets, while Edina goalkeeper Gina Diaz made three saves to preserve the tie. 

Edina, now 6-3-5 overall and 1-2-4 in the conference, close out the regular season with the Lake finale at Minnetonka on Thursday before traveling for one last pre-playoff tune-up at Duluth East on Saturday.

Volleyball

Seventh-ranked Wayzata shutout host Edina in three games (25-13, 25-21, 25-20) at home on Tuesday to drop the Hornets to 16-4-1 overall and 2-3 in the Lake Conference. Individual statistics from the match were not available.
