My name is David Goldstein and I am running for the Edina School Board.
I would like to first thank the Edina Patch for this opportunity to share some of my thoughts during this week leading up to the election on November 5.
After four months of campaigning and listening, here are some of the things that I have heard over and over:

1. Whether or not we have children in the Edina Schools, we share a deep pride in the achievements of our students and teachers. Our high quality of life in Edina is directly related to the high quality of our schools.
2. The primary drivers of success in our schools are teachers and parents. Teachers need to have the time, resources, and support to be able to do their jobs. Parents also need to be supported and should feel empowered to meaningfully participate in the work of the schools through and even after their children complete high school.

3. The achievement gap is real and we share a desire to close it. At the same time, there is anxiety in the community that closing the gap may impact opportunities for already succeeding students. We need to be clear that the Edina Schools remain committed to excellence. Closing the achievement gap means expecting every student – regardless of race, ethnicity, or income – to do his or her best and supporting every student with appropriate resources. All kids should have a fair opportunity to discover what they love and what they are good at and to succeed at the highest possible levels given their abilities.
