Pets

Is your pet overweight?

Like in humans, obesity is a problem in pets too

Obesity is a common problem in our dogs and cats and one that is difficult to correct. It’s hard to say no to those pleading eyes and wagging tail. But obesity can lead to numerous problems including diabetes, damage to joints/bone/ligaments, heart disease, liver disease, heat intolerance, exercise intolerance, etc. While there are an abundance of over the counter “weight loss” diets available, weight loss and light labels are not equal from one brand to the next. In fact, most OTC weight loss diets only have a small reduction in calories when compared to their normal counterparts. To help our pets lose weight, we must reduce caloric intake while maintaining adequate protein. Treats should only provide about 10% of your pets caloric intake on a daily basis. And daily exercise is a third vital component for successful weight loss. Need help in developing a diet plan for your pet? Contact the clinic, we’d be happy to help
