Justin Eichorn expected to plead guilty to soliciting minor (kaaltv.com) — Former Grand Rapids state senator Justin Eichorn is expected to change his plea to guilty this week on a federal charge tied to an underage sex sting. Prosecutors say he arranged to meet someone he believed was a 17-year-old for sex, and a jury trial had been scheduled for June before this planned plea change.
   

• Minnesota firefighters at Level 4 for wildfire preparedness (kaxe.org) — Minnesota’s wildfire preparedness is now at Level 4, with coordination run through the Minnesota Incident Command System based in Grand Rapids. Fire officials report nearly 600 fires statewide this year and urge residents, especially in wooded areas, to clear debris and follow Firewise tips as May’s higher-risk “spring dip” sets in.
   

• Healthy Soil Microbes Boost Crop Protection (farms.com) — Long-term potato research in Grand Rapids has revealed that healthy soil microbes can naturally protect crops from disease, even after decades of continuous planting. University of Minnesota scientists found that diverse microbial communities work together to shield plants, improve nutrient uptake, and may help farmers reduce fertilizer and pesticide use across broader farming regions.
