(VIDEO) Arts Center Concert Series Preview: Marcia Ball
The Louisiana-raised Ball will transport the Hopkins audience to the bayou with her soulful blues tracks.
The will soon get a taste of the bayou.
Marcia Ball blends her gritty vocal blues ballads with a unique piano style that creates a one-of-a-kind sound combining New Orleans jazz with Chicago blues.
Tim Kaihatsu, a contributing writer for magazines such as Guitar Magazine and former guitarist for the Robert Cray Band, called Ball’s music a kind of New Orleans R&B with piano.

“She definitely plays a lot of boogie woogie. She gets some of her inspiration from guys like Fats Domino and [New Orleans Blues singer] Professor Longhair,” Kaihatsu said.
“Ball plays masterful, red hot tracks from the Texas-Louisiana border,” according to the Boston Herald.

Ball started out playing with bands like Gum and Freda and The Firedogs, playing mostly progressive country. She began to develop her own style, though, and eventually split to begin a solo career.
She was nominated for a Grammy in 2005 with her album Live! Down The Road. In 2010, she was inducted into the Gulf Coast Music Hall Of Fame, whose members include Percy Sledge and ZZ Top.
Other highlights include an appearance on the PBS series Austin City Limits and The Late Show With David Letterman.
Her most recent album, Roadside Attractions, was entirely written or co-written by Ball and, according to her website, “finds her at her creative peak.”
Ball will at 7 p.m. November 29 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Tickets cost $28 and are available on the arts center’s website.
