Hopkins Teacher Recognized for Innovative Financial Education

Patty Ormson, a teacher at , received second place in the 2012 Personal Financial Educator Award competition for her learning activity R U Real.
Thrivent Financial Foundation sponsors the competition, which was introduced in 2006 to recognize teachers who create and implement innovative learning activities that increase personal finance understanding.
Projects submitted are judged based on the following criteria: 1) innovation in approach and development 2) emphasis on personal finance concepts 3) ease of replication by other educators 4) assessment of student learning.

As part of the award, Ormson will be honored at the annual EconFest celebration on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 8, at the 3M Innovation Center in Maplewood, Minn. She will also be presented with a check for $500.
In 2011, Hopkins Public Schools became the first district in Minnesota to make financial literacy a graduation requirement. All students need to take a financial literacy class in ninth-grade and again in their junior or senior year.
