Two Artstreet Sculptures Find Permanent Home in Hopkins

'Like A Tree, Rooted in the Earth' and 'Shoo-Shoe Train' were chosen by the voters to remain in Hopkins.

Hopkins’ favorite Artstreet sculptures will be calling Hopkins home for good.

The partnered with Artstreet to buy Richards D. Poey’s “Like A Tree, Rooted in the Earth,” located in Clock Tower Plaza. Think Hopkins—the joint marketing campaign sponsored by the city and the Hopkins Business & Civic Association (HBCA)—partnered with Artstreet to buy Kyle Fokken’s “Shoo-Shoe Train,” which sits by the parking lot.

Artstreet is a collaboration between the city, the HBCA and the Friends of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The idea was sparked by a $10,000 Metropolitan Regional Arts Council grant. Hopkins solicited submissions from artists, and judges pored through the entries before selecting five pieces for installation along Mainstreet.

Voters selected their favorite pieces, and the winners were selected to remain in Hopkins permanently. Poey won the People’s Choice Award, and Fokken won the Children’s Choice Award.

Organizers plan for the purchase of the sculptures to be the first step toward installing more permanent art pieces around Hopkins.
