65 Cows Lost in Scott County Barn Fire Friday

Fire crews battled a barn fire in Elko New Market early Friday amidst subzero temperatures. About 65 cows were lost in the fire.

On Jan. 13, 2017 at about 4:22 a.m., a barn fire was reported north of the intersection of 260th Street East and Xerxes Avenue in New Market Township in Scott County. Initial investigation shows that this was a working dairy barn that contained approximately 65 cows, which were all lost due to the fire.

Police said the owners, Ray and Cindy Deutsch were home at the time and no individuals were hurt during the course of the fire. No other buildings on the property were damaged by the fire, according to a news release.

The Elko/New Market Fire Department, New Prague Fire Department, Lakeville Fire Department, Prior Lake Fire Department assisted in extinguishing the fire. The Northfield Ambulance, along with the Elko/New Market Police Department assisted Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies at the scene.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Elko New Market Fire Department, are investigating the cause of the fire. Officals said nothing appears suspicious at this time.
