1 Hospitalized After Wednesday Night Shooting In Crystal

The shooting happened on the 3600 block of Colorado Avenue North.

CRYSTAL, MN — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer involved shooting incident that happened on Wednesday night in the city of Crystal.

Hennepin County sheriff’s deputies and Crystal police officers arrived at a home on the 3600 block of Colorado Avenue North in Crystal just before 7 p.m. May 23 to serve an man with a court-ordered "emergency order for protection" related to allegations that he posed an “immediate danger of domestic abuse.”

The court order required his removal from the home. While officers tried to remove him, the man armed himself with a knife and locked himself in a bathroom, according to police.

Officers negotiated with the man for about two and a half hours before making entry into the room. Repeated efforts to tase him were ineffective.

At one point, one of the deputies fired his gun, striking the man. Deputies and officers provided medical aid at the scene.

The man was taken by ambulance to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale where he is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

BCA crime scene personnel recovered a knife at the scene. No officers were injured and no one else was in the home at the time.

There is no ongoing threat to the public, according to authorities.

Crystal police officers at the scene were wearing body cameras. Plymouth and Robbinsdale police officers were also at the scene during the incident but were not inside the home when the shooting occurred.

The BCA is in the early stages of its investigation and says more information will be made available, including the names of those involved, once the initial round of interviews are complete.
