500 Homeowners Affected By Upcoming Maple Grove Road Projects

Maple Grove engineers have selected three residential areas for street reconstruction this year.

It might be too cold to think about summer construction, but the Maple Grove City Council is planning ahead. The city is moving forward with three street rehabilitation projects this year.

In 2013, residents in the Shadow Creek area, Cobblestone Hills area, and those surrounding 89th avenue in between County Road 101 and Dunkirk Avenue will be impacted by upcoming street construction. The projects will affect about 500 homeowners in Maple Grove.

Maple Grove City Engineer Ken Ashfeld says the projects involve updating pedestrian walkways, repairing utilities, fixing curb and gutters and removing the top layer of blacktop and repaving the road. In all, the three projects will involve 10 miles of new pavement.

These three projects are part of a bigger five-year plan the city council set in motion at their most recent meeting.

Ashfeld says the city prioritizes these projects by accessing repair needs and listening to resident's concerns.

“We try to stay on top of road rehabilitation so we don’t lose our initial investment,” Ashfeld says. “We want to maintain our roads as needed to save money in the long run.”

Once roads are rehabilitated, they don’t need to be touched again for another 30 years, according to Ashfeld.

The cost of the project is shared between the city and residents in a 50/50 split. Each homeowner will have to pay about $4,000 for the project, which needs to be paid back over the course of 20 years.

Construction on these three sections of road will begin in spring.
