Crystal ​Man Told Son, Daughter He Killed Their Mother: Police

A northwest metro husband who allegedly called his children to tell them he killed their mother has been charged with murder.

CRYSTAL, MN — A northwest metro husband who allegedly called his children to tell them he killed their mother has been charged with murder, Crystal police announced Friday. At 6:23 p.m. on July 12, Crystal Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 4800 block of Yates Avenue on a report that a male suspect had killed his wife. Dennis John Sandland, 56, contacted his son and one of his daughters by phone and told them that he killed their mother, Sandra Kay Sandland.

Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with Sandland. Police say Sandland initially came out of his home but immediately retreated back inside. The West Metro SWAT team was called to the scene. At about 10:00 p.m, Sandlund exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

Sandland was charged Friday morning by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office with with second degree murder and is being held at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center. Crystal police records show only one previous domestic related call to the residence on January 2, 2010, according to a news release.

"Today, our thoughts and prayers are with the children and extended family members of Sandra Sandland," the Crystal Police Department said in a statement.
