Drunk Driver Knocks Out Power, Gets Frostbite: Sheriff

A man was found walking barefoot a few blocks from the crash scene with severe frostbite to his feet, according to the sheriff.

SHERBURNE COUNTY, MN — A Big Lake man was arrested early Friday and is suspected of being drunk while driving and crashing his pickup truck into a power pole in Orrock Township and then running from the scene, according to Sheriff Joel Brott.

Jonathan Michael Schinzel, 28, was found walking barefoot a few blocks from the crash scene with severe frostbite to his feet, according to Brott. Schinzel also had a head injury and was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital.

The crash happened just after midnight on Sherburne County Road 5. Schinzel was driving a 1997 GMC pickup when it left the road into the east ditch and hit the power pole, according to Brott.

The power pole landed on the road, blocking traffic and knocking out power to at least one home nearby. A neighbor reportedly saw a person run from the crash site, authorities said.

Firefighters responding to the crash saw a barefoot man walking near the road. Investigators arrested Schinzel and detected signs of impairment, police said.
