Help! I Need to Buy a Piano!

You really can't start piano lessons until you have an instrument. But you have options! Here are a few different routes you can take.

Inherit a Piano
If you are lucky enough to inherit your grandmother's piano, all you need is a piano tuner to make sure it is in good working order!

Craigslist
You can find a quality used piano on Craigslist for around $200. It can be expensive to pay a piano mover (around $300), but you can also move a piano with strong men, moving straps and a truck! (I've done it both ways!)

Keyboard
A keyboard can be a wonderful space saver, if you feel you don't have room for another piece of furniture. Students love keyboards because they can use headphones to practice and it's also a LOT of fun to experiment with different sounds and recording capabilities. To avoid the frustration of "running out of keys," we do NOT recommend a cheap Target keyboard with only 61 keys.

You should look for the following in a keyboard:
1.  88 keys
2.  Sustain Pedal (when you hold it down, the sound rings out)
3.  Touch sensitive keys (when you play louder, it sounds louder; when you play softly, it sounds softer)

We sell a beautiful keyboard at our Studio. It's not too big for your house or apartment, you can plug in headphones, and you can do simple recording and playback! You can schedule a time to come try it out in Studio 7! We can order you this exact keyboard and have it shipped to your home! Details:

Acoustic or "Real" Piano?
There are several styles of pianos: grand, upright, or spinet. It really doesn't matter which one you have. As students advance, you can trade in and upgrade your piano as needed.

Piano Tuner: It is very important that your acoustic piano is tuned every 6 months! This helps develop the student's ear correctly and helps with regular maintenance. Call us for a recommended tuner (763-670-8882).
