Maple Grove One of Three 'Age-Friendly' MN Towns: Report

Baby boomers, much like millennials, are moving back to urban areas because of the increased public transit options.

Maple Grove is one of three Minnesota cities included in a new list of "age-friendly communities."

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has released its list of communities across the United States it says are livable for the young and elderly alike.

To be included in the list, the community's elected leadership must have made a "commitment to actively work toward making their town, city or county a great place for people of all ages."

Erin Parrish, associate state director of advocacy and outreach for AARP Minnesota, told publicnewsservice.org that baby boomers are moving back to urban areas because they have more options for public transit and other amenities.

Parrish noted that "there's this interesting parallel that millennials and boomers have very similar preferences in terms of livability."

"Cities really need to start looking at some of these shifts, and there's a value in ensuring that older adults are part of that community."

Maple Grove is the most recent addition to AARP's list of age-friendly Minnesota towns:

  • Alexandria (January 2016)
  • Maple Grove (June 2016)
  • Minneapolis (May 2015)
