Sorry for the absence but first the power was out, then I had serious internet issues and now I'm back. Today I just wanted to repost something I put in a forum, it's a comparison of Oliver from Ni No Kuni to a picture I came across in an old photo album. It just demonstrates how I'm always thinking about what gaming can mean on a deeper level of human experience across time.
Original post:
So I've been back into Ni No Kuni lately and going about my life as usual when one of those "huh" moments when past meets present happened to crop up and I thought I'd just share it with anyone who might be interested.
I noticed early on how the narrative of the game was dealing with post WWII tensions through the resolution of children's fables and I felt like the game even gave me an idea of what it might've been like to be a kid in those simpler times and how games can connect us with our own childhood and even that of others.
Then today a photo album came down to me from my departed grandfather that detailed his life in the army especially in those Korean War years. A certain picture jumped out at me, a picture of my uncle circa 1952. I'm not sure what kind of scout he was, but the resemblance was hard to miss.
